Here at Holland Landing Dental, we do more than just checking your teeth. We also check your gums, because, although they don’t realize it, most adults also experience gum disease. Additionally, we check for oral cancer, which often goes undetected.

Two Types of Gum Disease

Gum disease usually stems from infections, which, when left untreated, could result in tooth loss. In most cases, gum disease is the cause of adult tooth loss.

In recent years, research has shown the effects of gum disease on heart health and life expectancy.

Gingivitis is a superficial inflammation of the tissues surrounding your teeth. Symptoms of gingivitis include swollen or bleeding gums. It doesn’t pose a threat to your long-term health or your teeth, but left untreated, it may progress into periodontitis.

Periodontis slowly destroys the bony support tissues of the tooth. Unless the teeth are removed, they will become loose and fall our.

Unfortunately, patients don’t notice the signs of gum disease until the condition has deteriorated to the point when the teeth become loose. At this advanced stage, nothing can be done to stop it.

Your best defence against gum disease is good preventative care, which includes regular flossing and professional cleanings.

Regular Professional Dental Cleanings Help Prevent Gum Disease

When you visit Holland Landing Dental, we will perform proper dental cleaning to remove plaque and tartar from all your teeth to prevent gum disease. We may recommend a professional cleaning twice a year.

During the early stages of gum disease, there are some available treatments which we will consider, based on how far it has already progressed.

Scaling and Root Planing

This non-surgical, deep-cleaning procedure is performed under local anesthetic. We will scrape away plaque and tartar from both above and below the gum line and we with smooth out rough spots on your teeth to remove bacteria and create a clean surface where the gums can reattach to the teeth.

Flap surgery or pocket reduction surgery, bone grafts, soft tissue grafts, guided tissue regeneration and bone surgery are some of the other options available, depending on your specific requirements. In most cases, root planing is a sufficient treatment for gum disease.

Most of these procedures can be performed from the office here at Holland Landing Dental. We are known as a gentle dentistry, and we’re here to help ease the discomfort of gum disease.
